Who is this course for?
This course is for Employees, DIYers, Trades and Maintenance Workers looking to gain some practical knowledge in order to perform basic maintenance on or near asbestos including removal up to 10m2 of non-friable (bonded) asbestos.
This translates to anyone who may disturb, clean up, or remove small quantities of asbestos who are not required to have a removal licence but must be adequately trained. This includes small jobs such as cutting/drilling, sanding, cleaning up of debris, fixing to asbestos cement sheet, and many others.
Why should I do this course?
- This course satisfies the basic skills and knowledge requirements for trades, maintenance, and labourers to work with small quantities of asbestos as specified under criteria within WHS regulation in Australia and New Zealand.
- This course satisfies the CITB funding subsidy in South Australia (updated Level 2 Workshop).
Entry requirements
The prerequisites to this course are:
- A good understanding of English language (minimum year 9 level literacy/numeracy and communication)
- Statements of Attainment or transcript for:
- 11084NAT Course in Asbestos Awareness OR
- 10675NAT Course In Asbestos Awareness
- Photo ID on the day (driver’s license/passport or similar)

What are the essential elements of the course?
- Understanding licensing requirements and restrictions on unlicensed work.
- Understand basic regulatory code requirements.
- How to safely:
- Use and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Make safe asbestos products.
- Drill holes in asbestos.
- Work in the vicinity of asbestos insulation.
- Perform basic surface (emu/chicken) picks.
- Remove up to 10m2 of non-friable (bonded) asbestos.
- Use approved HEPA vacuum equipment.
- Sample material to identify asbestos content.
- Basic requirements for safe re-occupation including air monitoring
- Group discussion about particular jobs.
- Prices are provided as a guide and are dependent on venue, location, group number, and subsidy eligibility (if applicable). Price will be confirmed during the enquiry/enrolment process. As long as you have completed all the enrolment details you won’t need to bring anything else.
We provide all training material, resource references, and a pen to write notes.
Course Delivery and Assessment
Delivery
Delivery includes Power point, case studies, group discussion, and practical exercises.
Assessment
Assessment includes a multiple choice test and practical participation.
What do I receive upon successful completion?
A Certificate of Completion and Blue Card are issued. The card can be conveniently kept in your wallet, readily available to demonstrate to regulators and clients your compliance with training.

What this course does and does not do?
- This training fulfils the basic skills and knowledge requirements to help perform minor maintenance and removal activity under WHS guidelines.
- The unique course content is based on combined knowledge drawn from other formal accredited courses, audits, and case studies to bring to attention the work health and safety requirements for those considering working on small quantities or near asbestos.
- This course does not represent a removal licence or permission to remove asbestos containing material without a license and/or government notification. Practical training for physical maintenance, encapsulation or removal is provided in Working with Asbestos, or Class B and Class A removal training courses.
- This course does not represent on-site verification of competency or site assessment and does not abdicate the PCBU’s or their representatives’ responsibility to implement their own safe management systems.
