Working on Asbestos - DIY or Contractor?
(provided as part of the Asbestos Info initiative)

Asbestos products may have been used in construction of your home. You can identify possible asbestos containing products using the Asbestos Home Identification Pak.

When asbestos products have been identified - you will be confronted with maintenancece or small "make safe" jobs in and around your home. You may also face an emergency situation through accidental damage.

When you have completed basic training in Asbestos Awareness and the How To Do It Instruction Guides course - you can do a number of small jobs yourself. These jobs involve working safely with non-friable asbestos materials and include:

  • Initiating an emergency procedure.
  • Drilling or Cutting Holes in Asbestos Sheeting
  • Making safe cracks or exposed edges to Asbestos sheet
  • Cleaning up Asbestos sheet debris
  • Lifting & removing small quantities of Asbestos
    containing floor materials
  • Removal of fence panels, eaves or wall lining
Even with training there are some jobs that you should not do and should seek professional advice.. These include:
  • Any job that you assess is outside the instruction guidelines we have provided.
  • Any job that you are not sure of and consider is more that you ant to do.
  • Any job that involves friable Asbestos we recommend you engage a fully licensed
    Asbestos Removalist

Can anyone remove and transport asbestos containing material?
The Asbestos regulations introduced, apply to commercial Asbestos work - that is:

  • Any one who intends to charge you to remove more than 10 m2 of Non-Friable Asbestos containing material. (A Restricted Asbestos Removal License is required)
  • Any one who intends to charge you to remove Friable Asbestos material.
(We recommend you engage a contractor with a Full (unrestricted)
    Asbestos Removal License )
  • Any Trades person can remove up to 10m2 of Non-Friable
Asbestos containing material without an Asbestos license, but
they must do so in accordance with the Regulations and
Codes of Practice. (They need a BLUE CARD)

A home owner can remove and transport any amount of asbestos containing material as the "home" is not recognised as a "workplace" under the Act - providing no payment is made to any person or organisation for this service.

If you need to work with Asbestos We Recommend you refer to the OHS&W regulations, EPA requirements that may apply in you area - and
We recommend that anybody working on or removing asbestos products are trained to do so in accordance with the National Code of Practice and consult with their local government authorities - they have a completed the How To Do It Instruction Guides training or hold a current BLUE CARD.
