Prior to taking any samples
read the instructions carefully.
Sampling and laboratory testing is the only conclusive
method of identifying the presence of Asbestos.
The result provided by the laboratory is a record
of the asbestos or non-asbestos content of the
sample piece provided for analysis.
Sampling involves collection of a sample of the
suspect material that is not bigger than a 10
cent piece. In the sampling process the production
of airboiarne fibres should be minimised.
As you would be aware, asbestos fibres are colourless
and can be as small as 5 microns in length. You
should use a safe sampling process. We have developed
a Sample
Tag n' Bag Pak complete with sampling instructions,
P2 Disposable Face Mask and labelled sampling
bags. Laboratory testing order forms are also
included.
Prior to taking the sample you should fit a P2
face mask and keep it fitted during the collection
and bagging activity.
For stable non friable materials (eaves, ceilings,
wall linings, vinyl tiles) - use pliers to separate
the sample. If no edge is visible or accessable,
use a chisel or screwdriver.
For friable material - anything that is easily
crushed with hand pressure - like loose or fibrous
backing to floor coverings or rope insulation
material - CAUTION - do not proceed until you
have completed your How To Do It Instruction Guide
Training.
If you are sampling overhead, we recommend that
you use a full body disposable suit and goggles.
Be sure to wet the sampling area with spray bottle
then take the sample. Any exposed edges should
be sealed - refer to your training. Clean the
tools with wet wipes between sampling to minimise
cross contamination.
When you have collected the samples ensure to
label them identifying the location you took the
individual sample(s) from.
Double bag the samples with the labeled bag provided.
NOTE - You have not finished until you have completed
the decontamination cleaning of your tools and
disposal of your mask, wet wipes and other waste
material - safely.
The Asbestos Tag n'Bag Pak also contains some
valuable information on sampling anaysis and technique.
As a general rule, if you think the material
is asbestos - treat it as if it is asbestos until
proven through laboratory testing.
